Richie Faulkner stated in a November 2015 interview with Reverb.com that Judas Priest will begin production on a new album in 2016. Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, and Faulkner were photographed in the studio in April 2016, and Halford stated in a radio interview that the album will be out in early 2017.
Halford was dissatisfied with the album's resemblance to the previous one, Redeemer of Souls. In March 2017, the band went into the studio to start recording the album, enlisting the help of Allom and Sneap to produce it, which they finished in June 2017.
